Exhibitions
The themed exhibitions bring guests and locals closer to the unique natural and cultural area of the Nockberge Biosphere Reserve, arouse interest and thus contribute to the preservation of the cultural landscape and the strengthening of the local economy.
THE WINDOW TO THE BIOSPHERE RESERVE
Glockenhütte
From the Schiestelscharte at the Glockenhütte, the view sweeps over the green Nockberge mountains and down to the serpentines of the Nockalm Road. In the Glockenhütte itself, visitors are welcomed by the exhibition “The Window to the Biosphere Reserve”. At the centre of the exhibition is a film about alpine farming – the form of land use which shapes the image of the Nockberge mountains, provides an income for the people in the region and inspires visitors.
Five dioramas show striking habitats in the biosphere park, from the alpine pasture landscape and the summit region to the forest, mountain lake and high moor. The exhibition tells the eventful history of the once economically weak region, from the development plans as a winter sports centre to today’s biosphere park, which combines nature conservation and human use.
An interactive elevation model provides an overview of hiking trails, mountain inns and educational programmes along the Nockalm Road.
The implementation of this exhibition was funded as part of the project “Biosphere Reserve – see, experience and understand” via the Austrian programme for the development of rural areas (project type 19.2.1). The funding amount of € 62,000.00 is made up of funds from the federal government, the province and the European Union.
TREES AS SURVIVAL ARTISTS
Grundalm
The Grundalm is home to one of the oldest stone houses in the region. Here you will be welcomed by a biosphere park ranger who has a lot to tell. Together you will explore the area and learn interesting facts about the diversity of plants and the geological and cultural features of the Nockberge Biosphere Reserve.
In the “Silva Magica” nature park, visitors can relax and learn about the different types and forms of rocks, plants and water.
Clearly visible from the road, a large rock dome invites you to enter its mysterious spaces between ancient blocks of stone and to recharge your batteries. A circular path leads into the world of “nature spirits” (water, air, earth and fire spirits), and much more make this attraction a “must” when visiting the Nockalm Road.
Exhibition – “Trees as survival artists
The exhibition in the Grundalm “Trees as survival artists” focuses on the 3 main tree species of the Nockberge Biosphere Reserve and tells about their characteristics, special features and benefits. The aim of this attraction is to introduce visitors to the different facets of larch, spruce and stone pine in an innovative and creative, interactive and exciting way.
Alpine farming museum
Zechneralm
The unique Alpine Farming Museum on the Zechneralm provides information about our ancestors’ way of working and living. A farmers’ market offers agricultural products from the Nock region. The adventure playground “Murmeltierbau” is located right next to the Alpine Farming Museum.
WILD NOCK MOUNTAINS
Pfandlhütte
In this exhibition you can find out all about the inhabitants of the Alps. On the first floor of the hut is the animal exhibition “Wild Nockberge”, which is well worth seeing. What do red deer and wrestlers have in common? Which dance inspired the courtship of the black grouse? Visitors to the exhibition can playfully “work out” the answers to these and many other questions about the life of wild animals in the Nockberge mountains for themselves. The permanent exhibition is open daily from May to October from 10.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. (extended opening hours in good weather). The admission is free.
BIOSPHERE PARK CENTRE
Nockalmhof
The Nockalmhof is located just 3 kilometres from Innerkrems, directly on the Nockalm Road. The Biosphere Park Centre at the Nockalmhof is home to the “Petrified Worlds” fossil exhibition, which is unique in Austria. Visitors can look forward to a new multimedia and 3D cinema, a spacious catering area, a shop, the biosphere park information corner, the interactive children’s exhibition on the topic of “Bats” and a playground. Several display boards provide information about the interesting history of iron mining in Innerkrems and the surrounding area.
museum of local history
Türkhaus
The Türkhaus is located on the road from Radenthein to Kaning, at the starting point of the “Kneipp and Mill Hiking Trail” into Langalmtal, which is particularly popular with children. It is a centuries-old farmhouse which was originally built elsewhere and houses a small museum with changing exhibitions on various themes. It offers plenty of interesting things for every visitor, big or small, young or old.
The exhibition provides insights into the rural way of life and work, but also into mining and the various rocks that were extracted in the region.
